Blind Puppy Tossed from Truck

Yesterday I received a frantic call from my friend.  She lives on a busy rural highway.She was outside and witnessed this horrific event.  A small black truck slowed down and tossed the puppy in the ditch.  My friend ran to rescue the dog to keep it from wandering into the road.  In just a few minutes she could tell the puppy had a problem.  I called my vet to alert her that I was bringing in the puppy as soon as possible.  In less than an hour, we had the puppy assessed, treatment started, and basic vaccines.   The puppy suffers from glaucoma and is malnourished.  She will need eye drops and pills for a few months to see if we can get the eye pressure down in her left eye.  The right eye had normal pressure, but no vision.  We suspect the left eye allows her to see shadows but nothing more.  In time she may even lose that ability.   She will require regular checkups and meds for the remainder of her life.

As a special needs dog, Precious, will need very close supervision.  She has no sense of height!  She will try to jump off the sofa, but since she cannot see where to land, she could seriously injure herself.  Her eye sight may be impaired, but not her spirit!  She is loving and full of puppy energy. 

The cruel man in the truck didn't think much of this little 3 pound dog, but WE do.  We named her Precious because she is precious to us.  Every dog here is VERY PRECIOUS to us.  Precious will not be put up for adoption.  We are going to keep her and make sure she has a safe secure and forever home.

ADOPTION EVENT - SATURDAY, APRIL 9 - TRACTOR SUPPLY - HAMMOND

Friday will be a busy day.  Lots of dogs getting baths, wire kennels cleaned, canopy loaded, adoption contracts and name cards ready, cleaning supplies, chairs, water, and the list goes on and on.......  It takes two trucks full of stuff !

We have several great dogs for all to see.

Daisey, a pure bred Bloodhound, 4 yrs old.
Boudreaux, a pure bred Walker Hound, just under a year old
Dixie, a terrier mix, 18 months
Lucky, a Lab mix, 1 yr.
Hershey, a Cataloula, 2 - 3 yrs. old
Tish, a mystery mix, 1 year old.

We also have two puppies that we need foster homes.  If you are interested in fostering a cute little puppy, then come by and see us.  When you foster, all you provide is love!  We provide food, crates, toys, vet services and any meds.

Two Great Dogs find Two Great Homes

Wow, Sunday was a great day!  We worked hard at our adoption event on Saturday, but only had a few folks that seemed serious about adopting.  But, Sunday was fantastic!  Our Bassett Hound, Duke, found a new home with a local bachelor!  He wanted a low key dog and boy did he get that with Duke.  The gentleman's daughter came with him to meet Duke and it was love at first sight.  So on the weekends, Duke will have an 11 year old to give him lots of love.

Our second dog to go to a home was Emmie.  She found a great foster home with a lovely family with  children.  They had adopted a dog from us a few months ago, but it wasn't quite the right fit.  So, when I called them about Emmie, they were excited to meet her.  They had worked hard with the first dog to try to make it work, but with Emmie, there is little work to be done.  I checked with them a few days ago and all is well.  Emmie is fitting into their lives nicely.

It is certainly good to have these two placed, but we have more work to do.  Emmie and Duke left on Sunday and by Thursday we had added 4 more!  Thankfully two are small adult dogs and two are puppies.  We have no room for larger breeds at this time.  I will be posting pictures in the next day or two.

We need everyone's help in getting the word out about our dogs.  Please tell your friends, coworkers, and family to check with us if they want a dog.  Right now we have 10 dogs waiting for a permanent home.  Help us find the right family for them.

Two Young Ladies are Looking for Homes

This is Emmie as a puppy!  We rescued her from a rural area where she and a litter mate had been dumped when they were just 8 weeks old.   She is now 8 months old and needs a home.  Her family situation changed so she was returned to us.  It is always sad to see a dog lose their home, but we are so very grateful she was returned to us.  Emmie is housebroken and is very well behaved.  She loves to snuggle on the sofa!  We think she has some border collie in her lineage. She weighs around 25 pounds.  Emmie will be at our Adoption Day Event at the Tractor Supply in Hammond this Saturday.

Tish is another medium sized housebroken dog. This very sweet dog is around 1 year old.  She is a real people person.  When all the other dogs are running and play in the exercise pen, Tish is waiting patiently by the gate to come inside!  She is energetic and loves attention.  You can see more about Tish on Petfinder.

In Loving Memory of Sugar

My sweet Sugar choked on a piece of potato and died in my arms.  She was my best friend.  So beware all animal lovers.  Dog proof your house just like you child proof a home.  I know it was an accident, but I still feel responsible. Throw out all rawhides and stuff animals.  Be vigilant because they can be gone in minutes. 
So goodbye my sweet Sugar.  You will be greatly missed.

Lucky is back!!!

Lucky was found in July as a tiny puppy with a broken leg.  He spent 6 weeks in a cast then was adopted by a family with two children.  He had a wonderful puppy life.  Then his owners fell on hard times and needed to move in with relatives.  Unfortunately Lucky couldn't go so he was returned to Swampy Paws.  Now he is all grown up and ready for a new family to love.  He is an absolutely wonderful dog.  He is currently enrolled in obedience classes and is doing quite well.  He has learned to walk on a leash, sit, and lay down.  He would make a fabulous addition to any family.

HERE IS THE GRAND LADY - JAZZ

Jazz's owner recently moved into a nursing facility.  Now she is all alone and needs someone to love.  Fortunately the neighbors have volunterred to care for her until a forever home can be found.  Now she looks forward to her walks and greets her best friend, Bobbi, with a wagging tail and lots of kisses. 

There are many advantages of adopting an older dog.  They don't chew up stuff, and they truly appreciate your time and effort.  Also, what you see is what you get!  There are generally no surprises with adopting an older dog.  They are fully grown and their coats are in so there is no guess work about what she will look like in 6 months!  Please call or email me so we can arrange a meeting.  You will love this energetic senior dog. 

Busy Time around the Farm

Well, the weather has been glorious for the past few days.  There is so much work to do now that the rain has stopped and the mud has dried.  There are lots of "doggie" holes to fill.  I believe dogs need to be dogs and I really don't mind if they dig in areas that are not flower beds!  It is natural for a dog to dig and we need to allow them a space where is it okay to release their curosity.  However, that means that every week we need to refill the holes so no one gets hurt running through an area and falling into a hole!  I do believe that a few of the dogs think they are digging to the center of the earth.  And, ofcourse there is always the long dig line where they are chasing a mole!

Today I visited with a dog that needs a home.  Jazz is a wonderful older dog whose owner had to be admitted to a nursing home.  The neighbors have volunteered to take care of Jazz until a permanent home can be found.  Please consider this great dog.  She warmed up to me in no time and plays like a young dog.  Jazz is a senior canine and has excellent health.  Her pictures will be up tomorrow. 

And speaking of mature canines - Duke will be ready for his forever home next week.  His heartworm treatment has been successful and a final vet check will clear him for placement.  This Bassett hound is quite a charmer.  He is low key, but playful, and his "hound" voice is wonderful!  Both Jazz and Duke will be featured as our dogs at the "Seniors for Seniors" adoption event in March.  If a senior human adopts a senior canine, there will be NO adoption fee!  Warning!! no fee does not mean NO inspections.  We will require the same guidelines as with all of our adoptions.

All this dog stuff has left the farm stuff wanting!  Next week we need to get  back to farm chores.  Spring will be here before we know it and the winter pasture will be turned into the garden!  We need to plant the additional pasture now so the donkeys will have rye grass all spring.  So much to do and so little time......

OKAY OKAY OKAY - MY CAJUN SPELLING IS ALL WRONG

Hey, what do YOU think?  Is it Bleau, Blu, Bleaux, or just plain ole Blue.  We need to give the dogs interesting names to catch the attention of potential owners.  So to all my Cajun relatives, I do apologize for the incorrect spelling.
